En février 1962, Eric Dolphy réunit quelques musiciens et profite d’un studio vacant pour enregistrer Out to Lunch en une demi-journée. Il enchaîne ensuite avec une tournée en Europe dans le quintet de Mingus, puis une date ou deux avec Coltrane, et il décède en juin de la même année. Inutile de préciser qu’il n’a jamais donné ce répertoire en concert…
Cette musique est disponible, quasiment vierge, en apesanteur avec les martinets qui décrivent des arabesques dans le ciel des œuvres inachevables. Il faut l’arroser pour la voir pousser, préhensile comme le pouce et immanente à croquer, pour en récolter sa liberté de ton et perpétuer sa vocation jubilatoire.
Les compositions de ce disque et son architecture ne s’embarrassent pas des critères jazzistiques en vigueur à l’époque ; mais c’est bien connu, l’ARFI non plus !
Nous avons choisi de reconstituer la formation instrumentale du fameux disque « Out to Lunch » afin qu’il connaisse les joies de la scène et la chaleur des concerts. Quitte à reprendre avec exhaustivité les compositions de cet enregistrement, nous avons voulu pousser le mimétisme un peu plus loin en respectant malicieusement l’orchestration du disque, c’est pourquoi le choix des musiciens s’est porté sur Mélissa Acchiardi (vibraphone), Christophe Gauvert (contrebasse), Guillaume Grenard (trompette), Clément Gibert (sax alto, clarinette basse) et Christian Rollet (batterie) pour jouer ces mélodies joyeuses et déroutantes, prolonger cette musique et glisser avec le même vertige sur les surgeons ténus de l’improvisation.

inDOLPHYlités is a new band within collective ARFI. The first show has been organized in November 2019 (Djazz Nevers Festival, France).
In February 1962, Eric Dolphy took advantage of a vacant studio to record Out to Lunch in half a day with a few musicians. He then went on a tour in Europe with the Mingus quintet, and died the same year in June, before this repertoire could be performed live in public.
The compositions of this record and its architecture are not shaped within the jazzistic criteria in force at the time ; neither is ARFI’s music.
Working on Eric Dolphy’s music nowadays is consistent with the idea of a style connection between this unparalleled musician and more contemporary ways of playing music.
We have chosen to recreate the musical ensemble of the famous Out to Lunch record. Therefore the music will know the joys of stage and the warmth of concerts, maliciously respecting the orchestration of the disc to play these joyous and confusing melodies, to hear the music grow in rearrangements and bloom in improvisation.
Some compositions of the band in the spirit of Eric Dolphy’s work mingle with the original pieces to create a new repertoire, between faithful tribute and deliberate infidelity.
